Former President George H.W. Bush was released from a hospital in Maine after recovering from a fall that broke vertebrae in his neck, his spokesman said Sunday.

“A very grateful President @GeorgeHWBush was discharged today from @MaineMed after four days of treatment for fractured veterbrae,” tweeted Jim McGrath, Bush’s spokesman and speechwriter.

During a stay at his home in Maine, the former president, 91, broke a vertebrae in his neck during a fall Wednesday.

A previous statement released last week about the president’s condition said Bush never lost consciousness and the injury didn’t impinge his spine or result in any neurological “deficits.”

The doctors planned to let the injury heal on its own without surgery. He went to the hospital to be fitted for a brace to immobilize the area and to continue physical therapy.
